Maths

This week we are looking at subtraction and building on to what we already know. Please link this to last week’s addition skills.

Please check some answers using the inverse operation, for example: 48 – 20 = 28

I can check this by reversing the calculation. 28 + 20 = 48

When completing column subtraction the terms regrouping refers to the numbers carried along the bottom. Exchanging /borrowing is for numbers that are smaller than the amount they are taking away. For example 3 -7 cannot be done so the 3 needs to borrow from the 10s column.

Monday

Group 1 subtracting 10 to support this children can use a 100 square and move down the tens column. (check your answer using the inverse operation)

23 - 10 =              16 - 10 =       45 - 10 =            14 - 10 =            17 - 10 =

99 - 10 =            50 - 10 =        83 - 10 =          34 - 10 =      59 - 10 =

EXT 31 - 10 - 10 =            45 - 20 =

Group 2 subtracting multiples of 10. (check using inverse operation)

52 - 30 =                      87 - 40 =             94 - 60 =

49 - 40 =                      72 - 20 =

EXT 104- 50 =                124 - 40 =

Group 3 subtracting ones from a 2 digit number (

   1a. 8 - 3 =                               1b. 8 - 6 =

    18 - 3 =                               28 - 6 =

    38  - 3 =                             58 - 6 =

    2a. 9 - 5 =                                 2b. 7 - 2 =

       59 - 5 =                                      37 - 2 =

       89 - 5 =                                      77 - 2 =

EXT 13 – 7 =                          1 4 – 9  =

23 – 7 =                               44 – 9 =

43 -7 =                                 94 – 9 =

Tuesday

Group 1 take away near 10 (9 and 11) for 9 mentally 10 but add 1 more. For 11 mentally 10 then take 1 more.

13 - 11 =               23 - 9 =               19 - 9 =               95 - 11 =

27 - 11 =               27 - 9 =               34 - 11 =             34 - 9 =

52 - 11 =             52 - 9 =

EXT write your own.

Group 2 subtracting using chunking using written method

e.g 63 – 21 =

63 – 20 = 43

43 – 1 = 42

  1. 84 – 25 =            2. 62 – 14 =         3. 81 – 19 =

4. 75 – 42 =             5. 108 – 27 =        6. 93 – 62 =

EXT 106 – 89 =                  131 – 54 =

Group 3 column subtraction no borrowing see sheet below

Wednesday

Group 1  subtraction using chunking on a number line

Draw your blank number line and complete as you did for addition but in the reverse. Discuss that the number line will now go backwards in subtraction.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ABI7UFDg2o

  1. 64 – 33 =     2. 85 – 62 =       3. 97 – 44 =

4. 72 – 19 =      5. 37 – 29 =        6. 82 – 59 =
