The ‘common good’ literally means ‘for the good of all’. When the key principles at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching (see previous learning) are lived out, then the common good is achieved. The common good is at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching and is linked to justice for everyone. It is about ensuring that each person is able to live in a way

which respects their human dignity. The common good is inspired by the way Jesus related to people. He cared for the poor, weak, and those whom others regarded as strangers

or outcasts. Christians are encouraged to put their faith into action to achieve the common good.

The children can reflect on their time in primary school and think of examples of times they have put faith into action to work for the common good, by living out a teaching from the Bible or from an inspirational person. Root your reflections in Scripture and belief

CONTENT

When I was hungry...

Read Matthew 25:31-45 from your Bible, as you show the children the PowerPoint of the parable of the sheep and goats. (cafod.org.uk/comeandsee). Explain that it is a parable about how God will judge everybody at the end of time. Jesus tells us that whenever we look after one another, we have looked after him. He tells us we should have an attitude of care for our sisters and brothers all the time. This parable is about living justly for the good of everyone.

SOME KEY QUESTIONS

  1. What does this parable tell you about Jesus?
  2. What do you think the King will say to those on his left?

What would you say to them?

  1. What do you think were the motives of those who showed care? Remember they were surprised that they were serving the King?
  2. What does the parable have to say to us today?
  3. How does the Scripture reflect belief in the common good/good for all?
  4. Jesus showed us a just way to live. What does living justly mean – in our homes, schools, parish and local communities?
  5. What is CAFOD doing to make the world a better and just place?
  6. Can you identify anyone today who has made a change in their life for the good of other people? Describe the change they made, and explain how that change has affected the lives of others.

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him.

16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[a]

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

I would like the children to read the text below and then write an eye-witness report from Lourdes giving reasons for the actions of

   those who visit Lourdes.

Lourdes is in the south of France.  It is an important place of pilgrimage for sick people.  It all began when a poor young girl called Bernadette Soubirous, had a vision of Our Lady (her story is in More Friends of Jesus).

Our Lady appeared to Bernadette 18 times, standing on a rock above a dirty old grotto (cave), where pigs used to shelter.  At first people thought Bernadette was mad, but she persisted and did as Our Lady asked her.  Often, she would pray the Rosary as she gazed at the figure.  She did not know it was Our Lady at first.  During the thirteenth time Our Lady appeared, she told Bernadette: “Go, tell the priests to come here in procession and build a chapel here.”

Another time, Our Lady told Bernadette to drink at the spring.  There was no spring there, but Bernadette scrapped at the earth with her bare hands and, after a few tries, clear, clean water appeared.  Later on, other people heard about it and a girl called Catherine, who had a paralysed arm, came and touched the rock and her arm was healed.  After that, many people began to visit the grotto and eventually a number of churches were built to accommodate the pilgrims who came to pray.

Today 6 million people come to Lourdes every year from all over the world.  Very many sick people come, some wanting a physical cure, but above all, a spiritual healing and to return and face life with an inner peace.  There are five special signs at Lourdes:

  1. The water: many people who go to Lourdes bathe in special baths in the water from the spring.
  2. The rock of the grotto: pilgrims like to touch the rock of the grotto where Our Lady stood.
  3. Light: at night, there is a candlelight procession and all day there are candles burning in front of the grotto, reminding people of the light of Christ.
  4. The crowds are huge, coming from every race and nation, young and old, sick and healthy.  Lourdes is a true experience of the Church, a gathering together of all the scattered children of God.
  5. The sick are given a special blessing every afternoon.  It gives them comfort and their helpers also gain from the experience of being with the sick and serving them as Christ cared for the sick when he was on earth.

   R.E.

When a person is near to death, there are three Sacraments which they may wish to receive: The Sacrament of Reconciliation, the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and Holy Communion.  If possible, these Sacraments will be celebrated separately, but sometimes there isn’t time because the person is very, very ill and possibly dying.  When the priest enters the room where the sick person is, he will greet them with the words:

“The grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ and love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

Those present will reply:  “And with your spirit.”

The priest then sprinkles the sick person with holy water, reminding them of their baptism.  At this point, if possible, the sick person will confess their sins and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.  Sometimes the person is too ill to make their Confession, however they still receive forgiveness and there will be a Penitential Rite like the one at the beginning of Mass.

This is followed by a short scripture reading.  The Anointing of the Sick is the same as when it happens during Mass: the priest lays his hands on the head of the sick person and anoints their head and hands.  The priest gives the person Holy Communion.  (Sometimes the person is too ill to receive Communion).  Refer to Church’s Story 3 page 71, the final prayer is also the same.

These three sacraments prepare the person who receives them for their final journey to God and marks the end of their pilgrimage of life on earth.  They provide spiritual healing, giving the person strength, peace, courage and forgiveness of their sins.  They will know that Jesus Christ is very near to them.  It does sometimes happen that the person regains their health and continues on with their life on earth.

Draw a picture of each of the three sacraments and underneath explain what is happening.

       R.E.

The Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick is one of the seven Catholic sacraments. According to Catholic doctrine, this sacrament serves as a channel for special graces from God that comfort and heal, physically and/or spiritually, people who are seriously ill and in danger of death.

In the essential rite of the sacrament, a priest or bishop lays his hands on the sick person's head. Then he anoints the sick person on the forehead and palms of the hands with the oil of the sick, a holy oil that has been blessed by a bishop. During the anointing, the priest or bishop says the following words: 'Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord Who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.'

Why do you think the hands and forehead are anointed? Try to think of some reasons and the then research the answers.
